Multi Scale GMA Steel Deck Scow After WWII the need for a more modernized deck scow, or barge, was recognized by the various railroads serving the New York Harbor area. The General Managers of these railroads came together to form the "General Managers Association" (or GMA) in early 1951 and arrived upon standardized barge dimensions and design. These barges began to come off the Staten Island Yard Bethlehem Steel assembly line in late 1951. Many hundreds of these barges were produced over the next few years to replace the aging wooden barge fleets that the railroads required to maintain their operations. This kit consists of a one piece resin hull and lead-free pewter bitts and cleats. Intricately detailed down to the diamond plate welded decking. There are 2 hull heights offered allowing you to model a loaded or empy scow. You suppy the load. Actual model dimensions are 12 3/8" x 4 1/8" This barge is a great stand alone kit, or purchase one of our add on kits to give it a different look and function. See below for details. |

HO (1/87) Scale GMA Steel Deck
Scow Captain's Cabin This add-on kit when combined with our GMA Barge kit will accurately represent a GMA deck scow complete with Captain's Cabin, Cargo Bulkhead, and Storage Bins. When the GMA series was introduced in 1951 many of the barges came equipped with these cabins to house a live aboard captain. (Nowadays we would call him a security guard.) The real captain's cabin came equipped with a bunk, a desk, and a coal stove for heat. The captain would often be an oder, retired sea captain content to spend his golden years in a less demanding role. Kit comes with a one piece cat resin captain's cabin, bulkhead, and 2 storage bins (one was for coal and one was for gear). Placement template included. #147 HO (1/87) Scale GMA Barge Captain's Cabin $15.00 |
